NATURAL BUILDING

Building with the Earth, for the Earth

For the past five years, one of Catfarm’s main areas of activity has been natural building — creating structures with materials that are locally sourced, environmentally friendly, and in harmony with nature. Instead of homes that depend on high energy inputs for heating or ventilation, we design spaces that align with the natural flows of energy around us.

Rather than using environmentally harmful or energy-intensive materials like concrete or steel, we work primarily with earth, wood, and stone. Our techniques include wattle and daub, lime hemp, adobe, and rammed earth, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern ecological design.

Natural building at Catfarm is not only about construction — it’s about connection. As in the old days, the whole community comes together to mix clay, raise timber, and lift stone. Through these collective efforts, we build stronger bonds within the community and with our neighbors, who often join our chantiers participatifs (participatory building days).

Some of our completed eco-constructions include:

• Two lime hemp domes
• A mushroom house designed for cultivation
• A tiny house for herbal medicine making, with a rooftop terrace
• An adobe brick greenhouse
• A red clay shed with an outdoor kitchen
• Several yurts that host guests, workshops, and community gatherings

Each structure tells a story of collaboration, creativity, and care for the Earth.
