Bridges for Plastic

We will be collecting the plastic waste around Catfarm with a cargo bike, recycle it with machines,  and repurpose these materials into more useful objects.

We believe by now you are quite aware of the big plastic waste problem all around the world. But soon you will realize that these are not actually WASTE. With some love and affection and also with the right machine this material can be turned into useful products. Both giving Catfarm community and local people a chance to reunite, mixing people from different cultural backgrounds and at the same time creating awareness around this material while reducing the environmental impacts of plastic by turning it into a resources, and not a trash. By carrying out this project we aim to connect with the people of Poussan while reintroducing their plastic waste as valuable products to them. Poussan is a local community which does not have many opportunities to encounter different cultures. Whereas Catfarm is a multicultural place where many different cultural values are present in a safe space. Another purpose we have regarding this project is to create possibilities for the locals to improve their intercultural competence. This purpose of ours will be supported by the creation of a plastic currency system where people would get plastic coins made out of the plastic waste that we will collect, in exchange for 10 plastic bottles. Later on, with the coins, one could receive services at the Catfarm (a handmade product, a dinner, a yoga class etc)!

what happened over the years

It’s time to give some insights of what has been up to in the project since the beginning

We have organized several trips to Poussan dump to see what happens to the waste and to see how the machines divide the waste.

We cats created a space in Catfarm community to collect plastic and to sort the plastics based on their types (numbers). The numbers 1-2-5-6 plastics are separated for Catfarm and cleaned. We experimented on several techniques to clean the oily plastics at best without any chemicals.

Catfarm purchased its first recycling machine: “shredder”. With the help of this machine we shred the plastic that we sorted based on the types (numbers) into small pieces.

Catfarm community had done a partnership with La Palanque. La Palanque has provided a new machine to Catfarm: “injector”. With this new machine we had the opportunity to reshape the microplastics that we cleaned and separated by types (numbers) and colors.

For years Catfarm community has given plastic workshops to volunteers regarding the importance of recycling, methods for recycling, plastic types, plastic wastes’ harm on environment and so on.

Also with the organized “open days” we gave workshops to the local community of Poussan and displayed the jewelry and other objects that we recycled with the collected plastic and introduced the Bridges for Plastic project to the local community.

Bridges for plastıc youth exchange

Catfarm hosted 36 passionate young adults from around the world to address the pressing issue of plastic pollution head-on.

In fact we have implemented a station that calls “Precious Plastic” at the Catfarm for the region to create awareness around the issue of plastic, create social links, and a flux of solidarity with the local people while educating the children, teenagers, local associations, and traders. Collecting plastic will be a way of creating a bridge between everyone ! Several workshops have been designed and continue to be designed in Catfarm for the purpose of recycling the plastic waste and also creating new connections between people. By the workshops Catfarm team will also be helping the participants to see the possibilities of 3D printers and provide them and empower the opportunity to work with their new knowledge and creation. The participants of the project will be benefited by the welcoming atmosphere of Catfarm, the information that they are going to learn, the exposure to different cultures and traditions, and the simple friendships that are going to be created with people from all over the Globe.

We will be collecting the plastic waste around Catfarm with a cargo bike like the one on the right side, recycle it with machines,  and repurpose these materials into more useful objects.

We want to carry this project out to connect with the people of Poussan (34560, in Occitanie), to co-create a project with them, to mutualize the efforts of different associations, to explore the possibilities of technology, and to improve our environment in an innovative way.

For that, we want to attack plastic ! it is a material that is omnipresent around us ! In the Mediterranean Sea, there is over 600,000 tonnes of plastic thrown away each year. (According to WWF France, in an article, 07-06-2019). And most of this material is not recycled at the moment, it remains trash waste.

Quite strange since plastic is actually a very versatile material that can be used for making many diverse things ! So our goal is to collect the plastic waste around us, have the machines recycle it, to educate our community (Poussan including Catfarm) about the impact of plastic waste, and repurpose these materials into more useful objects. (Maybe a tiny house,
we have been inspired by “Precious Plastic”: https://preciousplastic.com ).

We then want to act on this rising problem while getting people around us involved in creative activities. This project will provide such an opportunity to connect with our neighbours and improve our environment together ! We hope to invite them to organize and create a system to collect plastic, were we will then recycle it, we will make workshops in schools and at local markets to present the process, and finally, we will make events to gather all the participants together and go further. Going further will mean generating a system of plastic currency where people would get plastic coins made out of what we will collect, in exchange for 10 plastic bottles. Then, in exchange for the coins, one could receive services at the Catfarm (a handmade product, a dinner,a yoga class etc).

In keeping with the vision of this project we of Catfarm hold parallel values. We desire to explore the possibilities of technology in rural life, and to go further in resource management (we already use dry toilets, compost, we gather food waste from local markets, solar panels, DIY products, etc).

To sum up, we have a strong desire to connect with the local population in a new way. This is the context of the beginning of the project !
